You and Me

You and I are lichen
Like mosses, we grow entwined
Sharing all of our sunshine
And energy that we find

Symbionts

After all it takes hundreds or thousands toiling
To make a life for you and or me
To support just two of us, our minds boiling
Takes a million worker bees
(Not that we're kings or queens)

(chorus)

Trudging through lives we wouldn't think worthy
Just dull and leaden, not free
Look at them and their senseless work
That's no place for you and me
(We need space to be)

Symbionts

(chorus)

These centuries of senseless production
Inevitably resulted in surplus
Allowing us without instruction
to exist on the discarded rust
(But we're not making a fuss)

We make our love in the cracks
Of ancient boulders like trees
We taste the dew that flowers
For hours feeling the breeze

Symbionts

(chorus)

Now we're lined up to entertain
Can we do it without mocking them?
I know it's expected of you and me
But let's get them all home by ten
(The night will be ours by then)

(chorus)

Symbionts

You and me
