Throwing Left-Handed

Singing is a lot like throwing left-handed. If I settle in and concentrate on what my back is supposed to be doing, then my shoulder, and then my upper arm, flowing to my lower arm without any shock to my elbow, then to my hand, my fingers, and the follow-through, all during the same fraction of a second while just letting that flow, I can hit a nine-inch square from twenty feet. And I get a small shiver when I do it without thinking. Singing is like doing that dozens of times in three minutes.

Playing the guitar is like throwing right-handed. I have to maintain awareness of the basics, the fundamentals, but the next thing you know I can let the rhythm flow and my mind and my body have brought together in space and time the thing in my hand and the thing I was looking at. With power.

I've been playing guitar for thirty-five years, and singing for a tenth of that; I've been throwing right-handed since before I could walk and I started throwing left-handed late last summer.
