Empathy

When I talked about getting the vaccine
I could see the fear in her eyes
When I spoke of the Democratic president
I could see she'd been terrorized

Once fear overcomes, love is no more
The scope of empathy turns callous
People cower behind their locked doors
Thinking "This can't happen to us"

Who was it, how did they get to these people?
What did they do to turn out their eyes?
To abandon reason and critical thought
And climb on board with these lies?

(chorus)

There are easy stops to board this train
A few ideas that seem to make sense
"Hard work's rewarded! Government is bad."
Nudging good minds the wrong side the fence

Quite a few things are just facts by now
Vaccines save lives - time after time
And cutting taxes never does good
It just helps with white collar crime

Oh! "White" collar crime, you can tell by the name
No one ever rots away in a jail
But talk "black on black" and those teenage boys
Will probably never walk a free day

(chorus)

When I talked about anything in the news
I could tell she'd been terrorized
