Another Song

I saw you play guitar by the river
While the ducks and the swans ignored
The sadness in the words you were singing
Another song I never heard

Standing by a pay phone in the rain
Listening to the old tapes of my band
Wonder if I'd ever call you back again
Or just leave a message in the sand

Something for the tide to wash away too soon
The words I always thought you knew
Why do I keep missing your connection
I heard you were coming by at noon

The gaps are getting larger by my guesswork
The echoes far too ambiguous
But every time I check my dog-eared pages
We never seem to close the book on us

I saw you play guitar by the river
Another song I never heard
