I worked to fit in
For too many years
Adjusted but chafed
By this world and its fears

They gave you a list and taught to recite
You learned to repeat all the lists night by night

I made uneasy peace
But I learned by days
In and out of space
Made for other people's ways

The chorus could change and evolve through the song
A progression of ideas explaining what's wrong

Overall was it worth it?
I gained some rewards
The effort was daunting but
I enjoyed - a little warmth

They say you're a skeptic, but that carries no weight
If you only apply it to ideas they hate

Then the plague came and shattered it all
While some paid attention others scoffed at it all
The contract was broken, contacts withdrawn
I never knew before how many I scorn

And mocking it all as the big status quo
You walk around with a superior glow

Thinking is different and harder to for you
Than listening to rhetoric and choosy, choose, choose...

But I fought just as hard
To survive past those years
And forge a new space
This far from those fears

Or just learn how to think
