You Made It

Maybe you have made it.

We all line up to hear what you play,
Kids these days raise you a beer.
Adventures come home to you every day
And your heroes treat you like a peer.
Maybe you have made it.

You blow your flute free or for hire (or not);
but usually you're asked if you want
Strangers applaud while friends admire
your comfort yet novel shared haunts.
Maybe you have made it.

At your invitation everyone plays
and brings their very best ear.
Grizzled old-timers to nervous tyros
Expressions respecting your cheer.
Maybe you have made it.

You love your dog and your wife yet more
they love you back, but who's keeping score?
I think that you have made it.
