Time Taking

My heart is hollow: what hopes drifted by, have heavily fallen.
The vanishing dreams compete with memories for my thoughts;
The good and bad, the gentle and the harsh, all jostle me,
And time, taking its terrible toll, unrolls unnoticed.

What sadness falls when reminders of sweetness and intimacy
Cast their shadow across my confusing countenance,
Another kind of sadness follows bitter memories of our errors,
And time, taking its terrible toll, unrolls unnoticed.

A smile at what we shared takes on a desperate poignance,
And relief at the unburdening is but a bitter consolation.
The past, the future, the past, the future, the present?
And time, taking its terrible toll, unrolls unnoticed.

I hope I get past this moment, this enmeshment in memory,
And time, taking its terrible toll, unrolls unnoticed.

And what of you, will you regret the same things I resent,
Will you retrace these tired steps in mystery, with tears?
That you came and gave, what you took and shared, you tried,
And time, taking its terrible toll, unrolls unnoticed.

Will your heart sing in freedom or struggle and cry in mourning,
Can our story be read for its lessons and not its losses,
Or do we simply have to recoil, recover, and reconsider?
And time, taking its terrible toll, unrolls unnoticed.

I grow bitter at the thought of you giving these to another:
Your smile, your kiss, your dreams, and your future.
I suffer guiltily and helplessly my inadequate response -
And time, taking its terrible toll, unrolls unnoticed.

I hope we get past these moments, and are forgiven by our futures,
And time, taking its terrible toll, unrolls unnoticed.
